Aswathy Kavu Theendal Kerala , INDIA,

. Aswathy Kavu Theendal
..

performed at the Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple
Tens of thousands of devotees took part in the ceremony. A three-hour puja preceded ‘Kavu Theendal’.

.The devotees, called ‘komarams’, hurled sticks at the temple during the ‘Kavu Theendal’ ceremony. They danced in abandon to earthy songs. Dressed in red, they were mostly farm labourers from different parts of Thrissur, Palakkad and Wayanad.

The temple is believed to be a memorial built by a Chera king to Kannaki, heroine of Ilamkovadigal’s Tamil classic Silappathikaram.

The place was said to be known as ‘Vanji’ during the Chera rule.
